Doula Training

Nesting Doula Collective offers affordable training for black, indigenous, and people of colour who are interested in becoming a doula to serve communities on Vancouver Island.

Birth Doula Training for Diverse Communities - Coming Fall 2020

Trainers: The Nesting Doula Collective members

Full attendance is mandatory to receive a certificate of completion in addition to attending a prenatal series offered in your community.

Fee: We charge fees on a sliding scale between $150-$500 to make this training accessible for students, low income and underemployed participants. Full bursaries are available upon request.

Our training curriculum is rooted in decolonial, anti-racist, Queer and Trans-inclusive principles and values.

  • Understanding the Role of a Birth Doula

  • Anatomy and Physiology of Childbirth

  • The Stages and Hormones of Labour

  • Pain Management - Natural and Medical

  • Common Medical Interventions in Childbirth

  • Labour Support Techniques

  • Hands-on Practice of Comfort Measures

  • Informed Consent

  • Serving cultural and gender diversity

  • Pre and Post-natal Visits

  • Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding

  • The first 40 days: Postpartum Support

  • Life as a Doula: Self-care, boundaries

  • The Business of Being a Doula

  • Joining the Nesting Doula Collective, Doula Grants, and Registering with the Doula Services Association

Virtual Workshop Series:

All participants are required to attend the complete virtual workshop series hosted every Tuesday for four weeks.

Week 1 - Birth Support for Indigenous Communities

Week 2 - Birth Support for Trans and Queer Communities

Week 3 - Birth Support for Newcomer Communities

Week 4 - Supporting all Pregnancy Outcomes: Miscarriage, Loss, Abortion
